The Al Shaheen field
The Al Shaheen field story
Since 1994, the Al Shaheen oil field has undergone a major expansion, with NOC continuing this growth today and into the future.
1994 to 2004
Oil Production in Al Shaheen field began in 1994. By 1996, 50 wells had been drilled and three facilities established, with oil production reaching 100,000 barrels daily.
An additional 16 wells and three facilities were introduced in 2001, expanding the field to 66 wells and six facilities. By 2004, production had reached 200,000 barrels per day.
2005 to 2017
Expansion continued at pace in 2005 with a massive increase to reach 169 wells and 21 facilities by 2007. Oil production reached 400,000 barrels per day.
By 2010, Cumulated Oil Production hit 1 billion barrels, coinciding with the arrival of two of the world’s largest double-hulled FSO vessels. By 2013, Al Shaheen was home to 220 well and 24 facilities.
In 2023
The expansion of the Al Shaheen field continued with work commencing on Gallaf Batch 3. Meanwhile, early work began on the next phase “Ruya project” which is a huge expansion project in Al Shaheen field. NOC also commenced a 4D seismic survey and ended the year with a new daily production record in December.
In 2022
2022 saw a number of production records, peaking with 305,000 barrels of oil on 24th November. First oil was also produced from the second batch of the Gallaf expansion project. December saw a new Al Shaheen 24-hour drilling record, with a new best of 7,501ft in 24 hours.
In 2021
We achieved a new Longest Drilling Well Record at 30,055 FT, continued our performance in Al Shaheen from the previous year, and successfully attained 617 Kbbls Integrated Production Optimization. We then installed new subsea cables. As we also successfully implemented the GHG Reduction Strategy, more contracts were awarded, including the Gallaf Batch 3 contracts.
In 2020
The Digital Twin program was initiated this year, which involved optimizing the Integrated Production and Offshore Activities. We also succeeded in completing the Gallaf Batch 1 Topsides Heavy Lift Campaign and achieved the drilling record in Al Shaheen, set at 25,911 FT.
In 2019
The OBN Seismic Acquisition commenced in 2019, and we established and launched the Digital Project Group, and as a later accomplishment we conducted the first Offshore Installation Campaign.
In furtherance to the earlier year’s Gallaf Batch 1 awarded contracts, the Gallaf Batch 2 was consequently awarded as well.
In 2018
In this year, we launched Tareeq Al Shamal (TAS), followed by the Phase 2 which was called Gallaf. The Control Tower was soon after established, and after much preparation and planning, the Surfactant Injection Pilot was approved and the first EPC Contracts for Gallaf Batch 1 were awarded.
